For when you're bored

Some people believe that being bored and doing nothing is a waste of your time. I am one of those people. Some people also believe that sleeping is a waste of time. I am not one of those people, because sleep is necessary, to stop zits from breaking out, to replenish your cells, and so on and so forth. But that isn't the point of this entry!

Today's entry will be a list of interesting websites I've compiled over the duration of, uh... Let's just say my university life, because lessons in college are that boring. So anytime you feel bored, when your Twitter feed is not being updated, or when your Tumblr dashboard is stagnating because people on the other side of the world are asleep, head on over to one of these sites because, THEY ARE AWESOME.

Let it be known that they are not particularly informative; not all of them are anyway, some are humourous, some interesting. Actually very little of them are useful. But, hey, better than stoning and scrolling through Facebook. That's right! Twitter/Tumblr = awesome. Facebook = not.

Back to the topic, and click on to read more! (Yes this means you Khai and Serene and Alan and a lot of random people who I never knew read my blog so regularly! So that's how my counter keeps on rising. Thanks guys :))

Who is it for: Everyone, but some articles require a strong stomach.

Oddee, on its website description, says "A blog with over 5 million visits a month, it features the odd, strange and bizarre things of our world. Be amazed!", and it is amazing! Okay to be honest, I don't really like ALL of the articles on Oddee. Some feel stupid to me, particularly the ones that feature some sort of pervertic theme to it.

But as I said, it is suitable for everyone. I'm a nerd, so I like the science categories, the technology and the random ones like Signs and Places etc... Like this page for example, they tell you that it actually rained BLOOD and WORMS somewhere in the world before! And just by saying that, I know I made you interested, so click on it if you wanna. I know I would :)

The rest of the site is littered with gems like this, don't be fooled by the most popular column on the right, with all the NSFW (not suitable for work ie there is nudity) indications. Most articles, the really interesting ones I feel, are in the lesser known columns (the unfunny ones). I mean, you just have to do some digging around. One of my personal favourites is this one: 10 people with unbelievable medical conditions, mostly because it features a girl who can only inexplicably only eat Tictacs. Why can't I have the same type of condition! My choice of food would be... Eh. Forget it, it's a hard decision to make. But at the same time, it is an interesting discussion! See see, this site is such a good conversation starter, and you have me to thank for it.

Who is it for: Young people, who don't have kids

It's a wildly popular site among American college students, because it's funny and it's true. Besides their regular comics and decision making flowcharts about college life. Like "What Late Night Snack Should You Get?" or "Should You Skip Class Today?"... Which aren't particularly helpful in decision making, but dear lord they are so true! As I followed the Should You Skip Class Today chart, all I kept on thinking was, "wow this really makes sense, this is exactly what goes through my mind all the time!"

But that's not the fun part about College Humor. The best part about College Humor are their suggestion columns, largely drawn from the style of Reader's Digest features such as Life's Like That, or A Day At Work... The even better-than-best part about it is that there are so many of such columns!

  1. Roommate Confessions. This is my least favourite because you will not believe the disgusting things roommates do to one another. Like using each other toothbrushes to scrub the sink, like WTF? Some of these really make me want to puke. Occasionally though, you'll get something really funny like how a guy peed in a pan, FROZE it, and slid it under someone's dorm room door. I mean, that's just plain genius!
  2. Dating, It's Complicated. Mostly about embarrasing yet funny dating stories. My favourite is one where a boyfriend pissed his girlfriend off before flying off to some other country. She then gives him a present and told him to open it on the plane. Turns out there's a Qu'ran and a pocket knife inside LOL. Okay it's mean, but funny! ;)
  3. Parents Just Don't Understand. This is about parents/older people and their aversion/ineptness at technology. There's nothing much to say about it, because we all know how much hilarity can idiocy at technology cause. This is a great quote from one issue: "I was sitting in class using a computer when suddenly the power went out. Immediately my current teacher graciously corrected us by saying: “Class, the power is NOT out, my Laptop is STILL on.”" Self explanatory.
Actually, there are like 4-5 other columns but those three are my favourites. I think I've read through ever single issue now. They're oddly addictive, just like reading jokes on Reader's Digest, except that they come once a week instead of once a month, and that they're free. So, do read it if you have time!

By the way: College Humor also has an affliate site for nerdy video gamers like me, Dorkly. But my games are pretty limited to Japanese games, so I don't understand a lot of the jokes. At any rate, gamers are but a small fraction of society so I didn't feel the need to put it into this entry. If you're a gamer you might wanna try it, it's pretty funny. Especially the Pokemon jokes :)

Who is it for: Everyone who likes to learn stuff

I first found out about this awesome site through Facebook, where my friend posted a link "5 ways Inception ripped of Donald Duck". I don't like Inception and I love Disney, so naturally I clicked on the link, expecting it to be some stupid list without much explanation. I was greatly surprised at the length and the information contained in the article. I was very impressed as a matter of fact. The fact that the author spent such an amount of time researching everything is really worthy of my admiration. And it's not some stupid humour article either. The wonderful thing was that it made total perfect sense, and really gave me a sense of amazement. It is that good!

So I clicked on some other articles, and the amount I learnt from this site vastly exceeded the amount I learnt so far in my 13 weeks of attachment. I kid, but you get my drift. It is so well detailed and explained, I really feel like I'm learning something, even though whatever I have just absorbed will probably be useless in life.

Like, take this example: 8 Movie Special Effects You Won't Believe Aren't CGI, there are plenty of screenshots, explanations of how the cameras are positioned, and size of the props to aid you in the understanding of your process. It is the only site I know of that tells you interesting things, makes it humourous while actually informing you of stuff you wouldn't otherwise hear of at the same time!!!

It's quite obvious that this last site is my favourite, but all three are really worth a read. So yeah, I'm a strong advocate of "good things must share", so all three sites above are good things, and therefore, I'm sharing them!
